Machine-RAUM 2011

Revolution I Love You, HD video 17: 02 min, 2011
Choosing another Strategy

On the 13. October Machine-RAUM will open its second international festival of video art and digital culture in Vejle. The intension behind the theme for 2011, Choosing another Strategy, is motivated by a wish for openness and new thinking, both as regards experimentation and taking on responsibility for a globalised future.
This theme expresses a wish for dialogue and democracy between artists and art works across social, ethnic, political and cultural strategies. The festival encompasses works that, in their different ways, demonstrate alternative ways to deal with everyday life and alternative ways to deal in the world.  The special thing about art is that it is not bound by the obligations of journalism or documentation when it comes to contemporary issues, and therefore it is able to come up with new strategies. The works show this in different ways, in everything from conceptual videos, short fictive gimmicks to performative actions documented on video.
With the vision of seeking out alternative strategies Machine-RAUM presents a number of artists and art art curators from parts of the world that are currently undergoing enormous changes, and therefore have a need for dialogue and communication extending beyond the political. Thus the festival feels the pulse of the way in which art and artists act some of the world’s crisis areas. There will also be a showing of video works by European artists and art students from Denmark and Germany. In these countries the political situation is very different, but the relation between art and politics is still an issue.
It is the intention of Machine-RAUM to function as a platform and venue for artists working with video and digital culture. During the festival the exhibiting artists will present their works and through artist talks open up the possibility of discussion and the sharing of experiences. Students from art academies in Denmark and Germany will present their works and offer their proposals regarding a new generation’s way of working with digital media.
Machine-RAUM is a non-profit organisation.
Machine-RAUM 2011, a festival for video art and digital culture, is organised by the association Machine-RAUM in collaboration with Vejle Art Museum, Spinderihallerne, Bryggen, Keller and Videoraum.

Istanbul Audio Tour/ Istanbul Ses Turu

CUMA Audio Tours has started as a series of events in 2009, aiming to offer the residents of Istanbul an opportunity to express the blissful and inspiring, creative, productive, intimidating and constraining faces of the city both to themselves and to the other inhabitants of the city in sincere and humorous ways. The conception of the tours is due to an urge to disturb the hasty and humdrum cycle of the city that does not let her inhabitants to take a break and contemplate. The project aims at the jam-packed daily life of the metropolis, the rush and the feeling of always chasing something. As the residents pursue the most loyal elements of urban life (transport, closing tills, the traffic lights turning red etc.) they initially start making compromises, which slowly leads to the disappearance of the awareness of being an individual, to be followed by the loss of ‘self'; this is where the project comes into play, to disrupt the process by simple and fun methods. The disrupting and distracting events intend to make the urban dwellers lost in city life more aware of themselves, of the personal territories of other individuals and even of the city that they live in.

CUMA Audio Tours is a cross disciplinary attempt to keep an archive of urban memory by creating a audio log of changes in the urban and social fabric. It is an on going project that draws different personal maps of metropolises, focusing on the subjective perception of urban environments and the impact of these environments on shaping this perception. The project aimed to define Istanbul not only through the eyes of an artist but also through the different voices like designers, urban planners, local shop owners and etc.

Required Materials:

A mobile audio device (mp3 player / mobile phone, etc.), headphones, internet connection

Instructions

  1. choose one or more of the tours
  2. download the tour which sets out on a route determined by that tour creator with a MP3 player containing the previously mixed audio recordings.
  3. go to the starting point of the selected tour
  4. press play
  5. follow the predesignated routes as given in the audio guide
  6. start again with another tour

Re-Locate project aims to address the historical fact of compulsory population exchanges in the Balkan region, which took place between two world wars, changing borders and possibilities to create newer bonds through artistic dialogue. The shared history within the chosen regions; Plovdiv-Bulgaria, Athens-Greece, Skopje-Macedonia and Prishtina-Kosovo, provides a basis to establish a mutual platform to research both about common history and develop a cultural understanding on various levels.
Re-Locate project endeavors to establish a cultural network on contemporary arts and series of art events to facilitate awareness in the mentioned region
Taking place in 4 destinations, workshops will encourage participant artists to develop works through their artistic researches, encounters with the visited areas, as well as supporting the networking among the region.
The project is composed of 2 parts;1st part is the workshop period, which is an experimental studio work with artists from various backgrounds (selected by Apartment Project) in interaction with the local artists, writers and curators.
2nd part is the residency period. Apartment Project will host 4 artists from each of the partner organizations for a residency period of one month in Istanbul.
After the workshop and the residency, Re-locate project will be concluded with an exhibition in Istanbul. A catalogue composed of the artists’ works; their interactions and the documentation of the process will be published and introduced in conjunction with the exhibition.

KIJKDOOS *7 [WE ARE WORKING FOR BETTER]
SUAT ÖĞÜT

For the seventh edition we invited Suat Öğüt to DE KIJKDOOS.

The rules that regulate the structure of traffic; roads, vehicles, pedestrians etc. these rules are the most common social arrangements in our daily life. Traffic is a perpetually dynamic situation; the vehicles, moving back and forth in different directions, indicate the constant flux of human activity. It is both chaos and an order; this order may be a signifier of the oppression by the state, and affiliated institutions, on the individual and his visual surroundings. So, since much imagery and many situations are entangled in the reality of traffic, what space can be created for artistic expression in this context on the thin line between reality and fiction?

For DE KIJKDOOS Suat Öğüt presents his series of photographs WE WORK FOR BETTER.
