Underconstruction – Berlin

September 27 – November 10, 2012

Apartment Project Berlin is a space for collective living, aiming to be a meeting point for international artists towards productions with interdisciplinary approaches. Moving from Istanbul, feeling the urge to come up with new ideas in a new surrounding, geography; the project is trying to take risks, eliminate the great expectations by questioning the notion of success while discontinuously transforming.
The first project to be realized is “Underconstruction Berlin”, focuses on the notions that one may observe in every corner of the beloved city of neoliberal agendas; while reflecting on the memory of revolutions, cabarets, wars and The Wall; migration and its manifestations. Putting two cities, Istanbul and Berlin, in dialogue, examining the relation/translation between two cosmopolitan cities is another attempt. The shop window of the space presenting inside to outside/outside to inside, allows the encounters not just between human beings but also with the daily life and spirit of the city. The artists ask questions, try to find answers and/or solutions while getting lost, changing directions and leading to new possibilities.

Apartment Project Berlin is active since September 2012 as a place for living, studio and exhibition space. During the workshop throughout September, there will be artist talks, presentations and performances – suggesting performing as a way of living - that are in dialogue with each participating artists’s curiosities. Collaboration and idea exchange between artists is mediated through these events. Converted from a motorbike shop, the project accelerates by internalizing the power absorbed by the space itself. The first project Underconstruction is a situation/collaboration/a state of living. The invited artists live, eat, work, exhibit, perform; negotiate, discuss, laugh and fight, change the costumes of the daily life in the same space for the month of September.  What one would see are boxes, books, nylons, drawings and words; heads that are spreading ideas, mentioning margins, radicalization, the political situation of the city as well as the queer culture, the contemporary music scene; channeling potentials from the past, performativity, costumes, cabaret, creating music from the everyday experiences; history and politics of the immigration and the city. The space becoming the skin of the artists, communal living experience allows for intense engagement among the participants and alternative production processes.
We are happy to announce the first exhibition opening with a performance/cabaret on the 27th of September at Hertzbergstrasse 13. We would be glad to share this night with you. A publication documenting the one-month period of producing and compilation CD will be completed and sent to the space once the artists go back to İstanbul.
Freefalling…

Metropolis M - The September Issue Unfashionably good!

Svetlana Boym describes nostalgia as a hyphotetical disease in her book titled “The Future of Nostalgia” and tells personal and historical events are often mixed together in “the emotional topography of memory”. According to Boym, the most correct way of investigating the collective memory is to establish imaginary dialogues with population, spread all around the world. If the best and only thing that a person can remember is the memories coloured by his own feelings, history consists of a topography that intersects million points of relativity.
Berkay Tuncay, Merve Şendil, Hera Büyüktaşçiyan, Elçin Ekinci, Yeni Anıt, Suat Öğüt, Fatma Çiftçi, İrem Tok, Gökçe Süvari and Umut Deniz Kırca update “emotionality” in today’s circumstances, tell their fictionalized stories on “Irregularity of the mind” over the concepts of rationality, belonging, temporality, absolute and personal reality. They visualize the history material by adding their personal interpretations, reveal the details of their own histories over the visuality that is presented to audience.
“In the irregular topography of the mind”is a story of resistance againist the impoverishment of the human mind again by the humanity. Is it possible to transform the whole, when the fragments are unusually rendered? How objective can a person be while the collective is personally defragmentized ? How far can an artist, taking the role of an observer, distance him/herself with the personal whilst mediating his observation? What is the distance between the work and the artist as a narrator? It is no use to find an absolute answer...Ten different stories of personal journeys through the irregular topography of the mind can be seen between February 17th and March 11 in Roumelie Han.

Machine-RAUM 2011

Revolution I Love You, HD video 17: 02 min, 2011
Choosing another Strategy

On the 13. October Machine-RAUM will open its second international festival of video art and digital culture in Vejle. The intension behind the theme for 2011, Choosing another Strategy, is motivated by a wish for openness and new thinking, both as regards experimentation and taking on responsibility for a globalised future.
This theme expresses a wish for dialogue and democracy between artists and art works across social, ethnic, political and cultural strategies. The festival encompasses works that, in their different ways, demonstrate alternative ways to deal with everyday life and alternative ways to deal in the world.  The special thing about art is that it is not bound by the obligations of journalism or documentation when it comes to contemporary issues, and therefore it is able to come up with new strategies. The works show this in different ways, in everything from conceptual videos, short fictive gimmicks to performative actions documented on video.
With the vision of seeking out alternative strategies Machine-RAUM presents a number of artists and art art curators from parts of the world that are currently undergoing enormous changes, and therefore have a need for dialogue and communication extending beyond the political. Thus the festival feels the pulse of the way in which art and artists act some of the world’s crisis areas. There will also be a showing of video works by European artists and art students from Denmark and Germany. In these countries the political situation is very different, but the relation between art and politics is still an issue.
It is the intention of Machine-RAUM to function as a platform and venue for artists working with video and digital culture. During the festival the exhibiting artists will present their works and through artist talks open up the possibility of discussion and the sharing of experiences. Students from art academies in Denmark and Germany will present their works and offer their proposals regarding a new generation’s way of working with digital media.
Machine-RAUM is a non-profit organisation.
Machine-RAUM 2011, a festival for video art and digital culture, is organised by the association Machine-RAUM in collaboration with Vejle Art Museum, Spinderihallerne, Bryggen, Keller and Videoraum.
